Abandoned handbag and clothes sparks major search and rescue

Police say they are still investigating why mysterious items were dumped on the quay at Millbay Docks on Friday morning which led them to carry out a thorough search of the waters using the police dive team, the RNLI and Coastguard.

A pink handbag and a black polka-dot jumpsuit was found on the dockside in the Soap Street area at around 10 on August 7 by a member of the public.

Fearing the worst and recognising that it could be items discarded by a person who had then dived into the water, they called police who immediately began carrying out a search of the Millbay area. At this stage it is not known if there were any forms of identification in the handbag, which was described as a large shoulder bag and pale pink in colour.

HM Coastguard and the RNLI lifeboat were also called upon to assist with the search throughout all of Friday and continued into Saturday where the police’s specialist dive team were also deployed to search the waters.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the dive team concluded their search at 9pm on Saturday, August 8.

Police have said their investigation is still ongoing and they are keen to hear from anyone who has any information which may help identify who the owner is or assist with ongoing inquiries. If you can assist contact them on 101 or email 101@dc.police.uk quoting log 284 of 7/8/20.
