Emergency services to work through the night after flash flood

The emergency services are set to work through the night to deal with flooding incidents in Devon.

The Barnstaple area was hit by a heavy rainfall earlier today, which led to damage to homes and businesses and road closures.

Photos on social media show how water covered roads and pavements in the town centre, with reports of knee-high water levels in some parts.

Firefighters are still dealing with flooding in the area and are likely to remain around Barnstaple through the night.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire Service said: “Fire control have received several calls for severe flooding in the Barnstaple area.

“Crews from around the county have been dealing with various flooding incidents all afternoon and are still currently dealing several. Crews are likely to be in the area all night.”

Goodleigh Road is still affected by the aftermath of the flash flood.

Devon and Cornwall’s Force Incident Manager told Devon Live: “There has been a small landslide which caused some damage to the road. Highways are attending.”

He added that the road is open and passable.
