Family of missing man informed after body recovered near Plymouth coast

The family of a missing man have been informed after a body was discovered in the water off the Plymouth coast.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were notified of reports of a body in the water near Mewstone, at around 9.50am on Saturday, March 5.

In a statement, police confirmed that the family of missing man in his 60’s, who was reported missing on Sunday 6 February, have been informed of this development, but formal identification is yet to take place.

Dive crews were spotted on Plymouth Hoe on February 7, including the Devon and Cornwall Police Diving and Marine Unit.

The spokesperson said coastguard crews launched on March 5 and a retrieval of the body has now taken place.

The statement says efforts are underway to formally identify the deceased and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were contact at around 9:50am on Saturday 5 March following reports of a body in the water off the coast of Plymouth, towards Mewstone.

“Coastguard was launched and retrieval has now taken place.

“Efforts are underway to identify the deceased and a file is to be prepared for the coroner.”

It continued: “The family of a missing person in his 60’s who was reported missing to police on Sunday 6 February have been informed of this development.”
