Man appears in court accused of Exeter stabbings

A man has appeared in court following an incident in the Beacon Heath area of Exeter on Boxing Day.

Devon and Cornwall Police had been called to Arena Park at around 1.39pm on December 26 to reports of “multiple stabbings”.

Several police officers – including firearms officers – and paramedics were seen around Harrington Lane and Arena Park, along with a number of emergency service vehicles.

Gary Richard was arrested at the scene and a police said a knife was recovered.

Three adults were understood to have been injured although police stated that none of their injuries were life-changing or life-threatening.

Richard, aged 50, has since been charged with one count of actual bodily harm, two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm, two counts of attempted aggravated burglary, one count of being in possession of a bladed article in public and one count of assault on an emergency worker.

Richard, from Exeter, appeared at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Sunday and has been remanded into custody to appear at Exeter Crown Court at a later date.

Police have previously stated that two of the three adults injured in the alleged stabbing incident received “slight” injuries, otherwise known as minor injuries. The third adult received injuries but ‘they were not stabbing injuries’.
