Left-back Nathanael Ogbeta has left Plymouth Argyle on a season-long loan to their League One rivals Barnsley.
Barnsley, whose head coach is former Argyle midfielder and captain Conor Hourihane, will play the Pilgrims at Home Park on the opening weekend of the 2025/26 campaign, on Saturday, August 2. However, Ogebta will not be eligible to play against his parent club in that fixture, or when Argyle travel to Oakwell on Easter Monday, April 6.
The 24-year-old was Wayne Rooney’s signing as Argyle head coach last summer but struggled to hold a place in the starting line-up throughout the 2024/25 season. He ended up making a total of 11 starts and nine substitute appearances, and scored once in a 2-2 Championship draw away to Sunderland.
Argyle have already brought in left-back Jack MacKenzie from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen as one of their five summer signings, which opened the way for Ogbeta to leave Home Park.
Ogbeta told Barnsley’s official club website: “I’m delighted to join the club and I’m looking forward to getting going with the lads. Currently, I’m in London because I’m getting married at the weekend but I’m excited to join the lads next week and getting started.”
Barnsley sporting director Mladen Sormaz declared: “Nathanael joins us with a fantastic pedigree, having played a good number of Championship games last season at Plymouth. His ability to defend, combined with his athleticism, makes him an ideal candidate for Conor’s squad, and we are delighted to have him on board at this early stage of pre-season.”
Hourihane added: “I’m really excited by the signing of Nathanael. He has good EFL experience for a player of his age, and he brings depth to the squad, which is essential. He will link up with the rest of the squad next week, and we are delighted to have him here.”
