Road to Devon to stay closed due to 20-tonne hay lorry fire

The A303 has been closed since around 3pm – and is expected to stay shut well into this evening – while firefighters tackle a 20-tonne hay lorry fire.

Photos from the scene show traffic on one of the main routes into Devon is at a standstill and there are long queues of traffic.

Six fire engines from around Somerset, plus additional appliances from Exeter, have been called in tackle the blaze at South Petherton, on the Ilminster bypass in Somerset.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said they were called just before 3pm.

“Fire Control mobilised Martock and Yeovil appliances to a reported car fire.

“Subsequent calls indicated that this was a hay lorry on fire and a second Yeovil appliance with Exeter water carrier was mobilised.

“On arrival the incident commander confirmed lorry well alight and requested a further 3 appliances and a telehandler to assist operations; these pumps came from Crewkerne, Chard and Yeovil and the telehandler from HQ in Exeter.”
