The A386 between Yelverton and Tavistock remains closed this evening for police investigation work after a car was struck by a barrel which fell from a passing lorry.
Two people were taken to hospital after the incident happened between Grenofen and Horrabridge at 11.30am today (September 1).
As of 10.30pm, the road remains closed for investigation work between Drake’s Cafe (Grenofen) and the Manor car garage (Horrabridge).
Police have confirmed the closure is expected to remain in place overnight due to ongoing investigation works, affecting traffic between Tavistock and Yelverton.
The contents of the barrel which fell from the lorry were described by police as “hazardous” and spilled over the road.
The two occupants of the car were reported to be uninjured, but were taken to hospital as a precaution.
Motorists have been advised by police to avoid the area.
A police spokesperson said earlier today: “Police were called at around 11.30am this morning with reports that a car had been struck by what appears to have been a barrel that had fallen from a passing lorry.
“The incident occurred on the A386 at Horrabridge, Yelverton.
“No injuries have been reported for the two occupants of the car, who have gone to hospital as a precaution.
“The contents of the barrel is potentially hazardous and has spilled over the road.
“A road closure is in place on the Plymouth-bound side of the road, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
“Enquiries, including a clear-up of the road, are ongoing”.
