Miami-style burger joint prepares to open in Plymouth city centre

Plymouth city centre’s latest food outlet is preparing to open this week. Signage has gone up at the new SoBe Burger venue in the West End ahead of its launch on Thursday, July 31.

The smash burger chain is opening in a unit on the corner of New George Street and Market Avenue which has been empty since KFC pulled out more than five years ago. The Miami-inspired chain was founded in London in 2019, with SoBe being short for South Beach.

It was launched by school pals Tom Ducker and Alex M following a visit to Florida, USA. It has more than 200 delivery hubs and opened its first high street branch only last year.

SoBe Burger has gone on to become one of the UK’s fastest-growing burger brands, with Plymouth becoming its 15th outlet. There are no others in the South West.

When it opens its doors on Thursday it will celebrate the launch by giving away 100 free burgers to the first 100 customers from 5pm. Patrons will also be able to enjoy 50% off the entire in-house menu for four full days until Sunday, August 3.

There will also be “high-energy vibes” with live DJs spinning discs throughout the launch and a graffiti artist creating a custom piece of work live at the event. Serving up a menu of smashed beef burgers, crispy fried chicken, loaded fries, and house-made sauces, SoBe Burger aims to “’shake up the local food scene”.

The Plymouth branch will open daily from noon to 9pm, with delivery available via Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat. Signature burgers include:

  • Truffle Cheeseburger – Double beef patties, melted cheese, crispy onions, pickles, truffle mayo.
  • Confit Garlic Cheeseburger – Double beef patties, melted cheese, crispy onions, confit garlic mayo.
  • Green Chilli Cheeseburger – Double beef patties, melted cheese, pickled green chillies, chilli mayo.

SoBe also recently launched a limited-edition Bombay Smash Burger on July 1, created in partnership with British comedian Asim Chaudhry as his character Chabuddy G from People Just Do Nothing. SoBe also sells a vegan Bombay Smash burger, a Vegan Cheeseburger and a Vegan BBQ Cheeseburger. There are also sides, sauces and desserts, plus drinks.

SoBe is the latest food chain to move into the city centre. It has recently seen the opening of outlets such as Wingstop , Kurdistan Restaurant and Karak Chaii, with more to come, including Pizza GoGo and Alfu Cafe .

A recent report from think tank Centre for Cities revealed Plymouth has seen a drop in the number of empty shops as food and leisure outlets target the city centre. Steve Hughes, chief executive of plympton >Plymouth City Centre Company, said Plymouth’s vacancy rate had unproved greatly and predicted even more empty units will be filled, putting the improvement down to an influx of food and leisure businesses and the impact of schemes such as the £18m redevelopment of Old Town Street and New George Street , and the ongoing £30m Armada Way regeneration .
