Man taken to hospital with head injury after incident at Drake Circus mall

A man was taken to hospital with a head injury after an alleged altercation outside a Drake Circus mall eatery. A 21-year-old man is currently in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Police said they were alerted to the incident in the early hours of Saturday (January 13) following the incident outside the Slim Chickens venue at Drake Circus mall in Cornwall Street, Plymouth. The incident saw officers called to the scene at 3.38am today after two groups of young men became involved in an altercation.

It is believed one of the group took a swing at another, missed and was then struck to the head. However they fell and their head connected with the ground causing an injury which raised serious concerns.

The man, understood to be in his early 20s, was taken to Derriford Hospital with a suspected bleed on the brain. However, he later regained consciousness although is still at the hospital receiving treatment.

As a result of inquiries, which included police seizing CCTV footage, a 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He was taken to Charles Cross police station custody suite for interview. He remains in custody at this time and inquiries are ongoing.

As part of the police’s investigation the scene was cordoned off with police tape between 3am and 10am when it was finally removed.
