Plymouth Argyle facing five consecutive away games in just 20 days

Plymouth Argyle are facing the prospect of five successive away games in three different competitions later this month and into November.

It comes after the Pilgrims were drawn away to League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers in the Emirates FA Cup first round, with the tie set to be played over the weekend of November 1-2.

Argyle return to League One action this Saturday after an international break when they play AFC Wimbledon at Home Park.

That will be followed by the first of the five away matches in a row, which is the Sky-televised Devon derby against Exeter City at St James Park on Thursday, October 23.

Argyle will then travel to Mansfield Town for a rearranged league game on Tuesday, October 28. The fixture was originally scheduled for last Saturday but was postponed because the Pilgrims had Brendan Galloway, Conor Hazard and Law McCabe on international duty.

Tom Cleverley’s side will visit Wycombe on November 1 or 2 before travelling to Huddersfield Town in league action on Saturday, November 8.

The Pilgrims’ fifth consecutive away match will be against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium in the group stage of the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday, November 11.

Argyle had two previous FA Cup ties against Wycombe, both in the 1998/99 season, when the clubs were drawn against each other in the second round.

The Pilgrims, the managed by Kevin Hodges, went to Adams Park and played out a 1-1 draw, with Wycombe defender Paul McCarthy conceding a late own goal.

The replay was played at Home Park 10 days later and Argyle won 3-2 with goals from Paul Wotton – from the penalty spot, Mick Heathcote and Terry Sweeney.

That earned the Pilgrims a third round tie against then Premier League club Derby County at home Park when they were beaten 3-0.
